For questions 31-40, choose the most appropriate answer to each question

according to the passage given. Then, mark the corresponding letter on your answer

sheet.

Perhaps the most familiar plant movement belongs to one species of mimosa

Called the sensitive plant. Within seconds, it can lower its leaves and make its tiny

Leaflets close up like folding chairs. This movement is thought to be initiated by

electrical impulses remarkably similar to nerve signals in animals. But without the

animalsˇ sophisticated motion machinery, the mimosa has had to be creative in

devising a way to move.

For motion, the plant depends on tiny, bulb-shaped organs located at the base

of each leaf stalk and leaflet. Called pulvini, these organs hold the plant parts in

place. When the mimosa is stimulated-say, by a crawling insect or a sudden change

in temperature  an electrical impulse sweeps through the plant. This causes

potassium and then water to be shifted from certain cells in the pulvini to others,

quickly turning one side of the organs flaccid. Because the pulvini can no longer

support the leaves and leaflets, this shift results in a corresponding change in their

position.

(C) 31. The author mentions folding chairs in the first paragraph in order to _____.

A.     settle a dispute  B. evaluate a claim  C. provide an example

D. point out a difference

  (A) 32. It can be inferred from the passage that the mimosa is called the sensitive

         plant because it ______.

plants  C. depends on organs called pulvini  D. contains potassium

            and water

  (C) 33. According to the passage, what is the function of the pulvini?

         A. To stimulate movement   B. To send electrical impulses

         C. To support leaves and leaflets   D. To produce potassium and water

  (A) 34. The mimosa would be most likely to respond to which of the following?

 A. A crawling fly   B. become limp   C. A loud noise

D. A gradual warming

  (B) 35. According to the passage, the sensitive plantˇs leaves move quickly when

        parts of the pulvini ______.

         A. drop off  B. become limp   C. sort out   D. twist

  (C) 36. According to the passage, what causes potassium and water in the mimosa

to shift from some cells to others?

 A. Signals from the pulvini    B. Movements of the leaf stalks

 C. Electrical impulses        D. Nerve signals

Naturalists have long been fascinated with the social behavior of elephants.

Traveling in herds usually numbering around 25, the elephant is a remarkably loyal

and gregarious animal. These herds exhibit familial characteristics, caring for the

young of disabled, and even killing an incurable member to put an end to its suffering.

Indeed, the herds are generally composed of several generations of relatives, including

several sets of monogamous couples.

Because elephants are such large animals, reaching up to 12 feet and 6 tons, they

are constantly moving in order to search for food, sometimes in migratory routes that

take 10 years to complete. Because elephants are not fully grown until they are about

5 years old, babies often have trouble keeping up with the herd. When this happens, or

when an elephants is injured, several members of the herd will stay behind to help and

protect it. It is extremely common to see older elephants using their trunks to help

support less mature relatives. Occasionally, a single elephant will become belligerent.

There elephants, called ¨rogues,〃 are then actually excluded from the herd and sent to

live alone.

  (C) 37. According to the passage, when does an elephant reach maturity?
